What Do I Worship?

What Do I Worship?

5/22/2008

What is the one thing that God desires that only you can give?

Answer: Your Worship

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.”

John 4:23

Are you intentionally leading your family to what it means to be a worshipper of God?

A. Why is worship so important?

1. There is a war for your worship

“…I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly. In the recesses of the north. 14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”

Isaiah 14:13 NASB

If Satan had a mission statement (something that if this would happen it would equal success to him) – what would that be?

Some would say I would never worship Satan? He knows he couldn’t get us to worship him directly, but what if he could get us to worship anything other than God? Wouldn’t that be just as successful. Such as:

  • Our image

  • Our kids

  • Our job

Worship – is giving worth or value to something above all else.

Giving my priority to something or someone above all else. We are all worshipping something all of the time.

You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or nay likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God………”

Exodus 20:4-5 NASB

God, show me what in my life do I have a tendency to idolize?

  • Comfort (I worship doing nothing – after work, etc.)

If there is a war for your worship – who is winning? God or everything else?

2. You were created for worship

  • We can give our devotion to anything because it’s in our design to give

  • It’s why we exist – it’s bigger than the songs we sing

    • It’s our life

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40But Jesus answered, “I tell you if these become silent, the stones will cry out.”

Luke 19:38-40

One way or the other God will be worshipped – by our lips and the lives we live or by another way. We were created to worship God with everything in us.

Worship should be an expression of every area of our life.

When we come together corporately – what are we trying to do? What are we trying to accomplish?

Key part:

1. The audience

2. The performer

We will never be the audience – we are the cast. We are the worshippers who worship an audience of one. Allow that paradigm shift to happen – and we won’t come to receive (although we will) from God, to hear from God (although we will) – we come to give. To give Him our heart and our worship. It’s sacred! To make His praise known.

Worshipping God is:

Responding to who God is and to what He has done. It’s our response!

Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.

Romans 12:1
